Ship breaking yard in Chittagong was the main source of supplying raw steel for the developing country - Bangladesh. In last 10 years, Bangladesh was growing very rapidly and demand of steel to develop domestic infrastructure was really high. At least 50% of domestic needs of raw steel were fulfilled by Chittagong ship breaking yard by breaking scrap ship collected from many different countries of the world.
This place is located in Shitakunda, in Chittagong district of Bangladesh. When I shoot these photos some years back, situation was little vulnerable, in that time, neither workers nor entrepreneurs were aware of using safety gears for hazardous work. Sometime entrepreneurs provided gears but workers didnt feel comfort to use them because of hi temperatures and hi moisture Thats way they like their traditional method. Sometime ships were taken to breaking yard with full of toxic gases and chemicals and workers had to work in those extremely hazardous environment without proper protections. Workers accident rate was very high including permanently disabilities.
Oil spills from around 70 ship breaking yards endangers aquatic lives while yard enclosures makes 16 km beach at Shitakunda in Chittagong out of bound for the fishermen.
The industry considering above mentioned grim aspects, can be termed as a gift for a few, bane and curse for many and a catastrophic threat for the environment and aquatic lives.
